First Lady Revealed On the record: sourced originals for viral claims

Claim review · Rating: False (altered image) · Updated 2026-10-26

This Christmas-tree "Michael" photo is edited: what the archived original shows

Short answer: The picture is an edited copy of a photograph of Barack and Michelle Obama in front of a Christmas tree. Full Fact reports that the background was removed and her face and hair were altered. An archived campaign page captions the original “Barack and Michelle spending Christmas in Hawaii.”

Updated 2026-10-26. Part of the larger review: what the originals show.

The claim

Posts on Facebook show a person with short hair and a white top beside Barack Obama and say the image shows “Michael before he transitioned.” Full Fact checked a Facebook post of this kind and published its verdict on 2025-11-27: False.

Side by side: the edit and the archived original

Altered image: the edited Christmas-tree photo of two people. A yellow circle marks the face that Snopes says was doctored to give her male features.
ALTEREDPosted on X on 2024-07-02, per Snopes (2024-07-07), which also found earlier reposts on other sites; Full Fact says a version has circulated since at least 2022 (we did not read the AFP piece it cites). Snopes writes that it is unclear where the doctored version originated. This is a reduced, marked copy from the Snopes page. We do not name the posters.

Our finding: Altered. Snopes says the picture was doctored to give her male features; Full Fact says one version also has the background removed. The archived campaign page captions the original “Barack and Michelle spending Christmas in Hawaii.” (Wayback, 2008).

ORIGINALAn archived copy of the Obama campaign's old photo page (Wayback Machine snapshot of 2008-10-17). The caption beside the photo reads "Barack and Michelle spending Christmas in Hawaii." Wayback snapshot. The photo's copyright is not ours and we found no public-domain version, and the archive keeps only a thumbnail, so we link it and show no copy.

A reduced, marked copy of the circulated item is shown for identification and commentary, with our finding beside it. Rights holders can ask us to remove it at submissions@firstladyrevealed.com.

How the edit spread

Verified real photographs

These are genuine photographs of Michelle Obama, from public sources, with the date, credit, license and a link to the file. They are all public domain or freely licensed, reduced in size. They are shown so a reader can see what authentic photographs look like across the years; they are not the original of the item on this page unless the caption says so. We looked for childhood and high-school photographs in public sources and did not find any we could verify and legally show; the earliest verified photograph here is from 1985.

How we know

  1. Find the earliest primary item: the campaign photo page, through the Wayback Machine, with its caption.
  2. Open the snapshot and read the caption; note that only a thumbnail is preserved.
  3. Read Full Fact's check for the description of the edit, and cite it as secondary.
  4. Date what we can: the snapshot (2008-10-17) and the Full Fact check (2025-11-27).
  5. State the limit: no pixel-level comparison, because the full-size original is not available to us.
