Obama did not call Michelle "my husband Michael": the 2015 speech in context
Short answer: In remarks on June 9, 2015, the president read aloud a letter from a woman who described her own husband, Michael. The official transcript shows the sentence that introduces the letter. A clip that starts at the quote leaves that sentence out.
The claim
A video clip of Barack Obama saying "I walk with my husband Michael and hold hands" is shared with text implying he was talking about his wife. PolitiFact describes a post with the words "I told y'all Michelle was Michael" beside the video and rated it Pants on Fire on 2022-10-17.

What the original says
- The White House transcript gives the venue as the Washington Marriott Wardman Park and the time as 11:58 A.M. to 12:25 P.M. EDT on June 9, 2015. Official transcript
- In the transcript the president first describes a woman from Pennsylvania who had been unable to walk because of osteoarthritis and, once she had health coverage and surgery, was back on her feet. Then: "[She] couldn't be here today, but she recently wrote to me and she said: “I walk with my husband Michael and hold hands. It's like a whole new world for me.” Just walking and holding hands -- something that one of our fellow Americans for years could not do." (In the transcript the first word of that sentence is the woman's first name; we replaced it with [She] because she is a private citizen.) Official transcript
- PolitiFact: "He was reciting a letter a Pennsylvania resident had sent him," and the clip is "from a speech in which he was telling a story about another couple." PolitiFact, 2022-10-17 (secondary)
- A USA Today fact check republished by Yahoo Sports reaches the same conclusion; the Yahoo page is dated 2022-10-25. Yahoo Sports (secondary)
- The official video is on The Obama White House channel on YouTube: its page lists an upload date of 2015-06-09 and a length of 25 minutes 44 seconds. We link it at 22:50. The Obama White House, "The President Speaks on Health Care Reform at the Catholic Health Association Conference" (2015-06-09, about 26 minutes), at 22:50
What we could not confirm
- We have not listened to the passage ourselves. YouTube would not give us its caption file (a "too many requests" error), so we could not use captions to confirm the 22:50 mark. The transcript is the primary text; the timestamp is an approximate pointer and should be checked by a person.
- The AP fact check could not be fetched; we saw its address only in a search result and did not read it.
- We do not know who made the clipped copy or when it was first posted.

Verified real photographs
These are genuine photographs of Michelle Obama, from public sources, with the date, credit, license and a link to the file. They are all public domain or freely licensed, reduced in size. They are shown so a reader can see what authentic photographs look like across the years; they are not the original of the item on this page unless the caption says so. We looked for childhood and high-school photographs in public sources and did not find any we could verify and legally show; the earliest verified photograph here is from 1985.
